Holding on to Summer

Holding on to summer .. how does one even do that? Well, we’re having a bit of heat wave at the moment, so that helps!

As I look around our yard I see my garden getting rangy and dry looking. I’d love to get out there and start pulling stuff out, but with my current hip situation, that’s not going to happen. So I watch from my perch on the deck as flowers fade and seed heads form .. perhaps I’ll just leave everything for the birds to feast on (in that unnamed season).

I’m having a hard time getting back into photography .. I’m dreaming of creating flat lays but the reality is that it’s just not possible at the moment.

I could try a shoot like these sunflowers on my little garden tabletop, but my mojo is missing. Case in point: I was at a farmers market last Saturday and saw the most stunning bouquets but I wasn’t moved enough to buy one. I thought if I bought one and failed to take photos it would haunt me. Ugh. When and what is going to inspire me to pick up my camera again?

But right now, rather than obsess over my lack of creativity, I’m going to embrace this last bit of summer by:

  • spending as much time outside as possible
  • using those fresh herbs I’ve been growing by trying out new summery recipes
  • a fantastic resource for summer recipes would be my daughter’s blog A Pretty Life in the Suburbs
  • eating out (on patios)
  • getting out on the lake
  • celebrating the changing light—it’s warmer, richer, and it’s comforting

Deep summer is when laziness finds respectability.”
