A Few of my Most Used Photography Props

Photography props are one of my favourite things! When I look back on all the images I’ve created over the years, there seems to be a few items I always use.

If I tried to “reinvent the wheel” every time I created a flat lay, I’d never get anything done! So, just scrolling through my Instagram page reminded me of what photography props I use the most which led to some interesting discoveries about my style.

After I decide what I’m going to photograph, the first photography prop I choose is .. of course .. a background. I created the following image for one of my favourite food bloggers. This project was all about granola and I decided that “Marbled” would be the perfect fit!

And then I played a bit with some gorgeous organic eggs I found at a farmer’s market. I used my favourite vintage whisk .. it’s the perfect prop and one I use often.

Photography Props for Food

Apparently I have a “thing” for round dishes of all sizes .. plates and chargers are at the top. I like to fill pinch bowls with some of the ingredients that go into whatever it is I’m photographing. Using pretty vintage utensils means I’m always on the hunt for vintage silverware which is a whole other story and one of my favourite things to do! I prefer linen serviettes to cotton as they are easier to manage. Check out my post “How to Style a Linen Serviette” for tips on how style this difficult (for me) prop. So here are some of my favourite props for food:

  • round plates, bowls
  • a small cast iron pan
  • pinch bowls
  • bread boards (preferably round ; )
  • vintage utensils
  • linen serviettes/napkins

Photography Props for Still Life (Flowers etc.)

When I photograph flowers or plants, I almost always have those little black scissors or gardening snips as I think they are the perfect addition to a floral flat lay and really help to add interest to the image. I’ll often point the scissors or snips toward the flowers, but not always. Sometimes I just line them up with another prop to keep things uncluttered. I like to group my little props together for this very reason, to keep the image uncluttered but still include all the props that I like. Here are some of my favourite props for floral flat lays:

  • small scissors or gardening snips
  • ribbons, string
  • coffee/teacups
  • small spoons
  • things to “scatter” like small wood stars, tags, stones

So there you have it! Using and reusing items that have worked for you in the past is the smart thing to do when choosing photography props!
