Small Things Worth Savouring

It’s August and I can’t quite get my head around it. The past month has been a blur with life revolving around my hip surgery. But I’m now three days past the 2 week mark and am so happy to say I’m doing well!

I often find myself dreaming of how things used to be, but what I’ve learned is that it’s not about going back—it’s about moving forward and one of the best ways to move forward is to celebrate the small things (which really are big things).

“Enjoy the little things in life because one day you’ll look back and realize they were the big things.”

Kurt Vonnegut

So today my musings centre around savouring the small things .. wonderful small things I’ve discovered in the past couple years .. like listening to podcasts. But it’s not self-help podcasts or how to be creative podcasts or relaxation podcasts, nope. I listen mainly to True Crime podcasts (hides face in embarrassment : ) but there you have it! Do you listen to podcasts? If you do please share your favourites .. I’m all ears!

  • a cooler spring and summer (not like last year’s heat dome and drought)
  • rain .. and lots of it! SO grateful for all the rain, and as a result our yard and garden look amazing
  • watching my hubby water flower pots, cut the grass, and weed the garden (he even fertilizes the flowers : )
  • I can “forest bathe” right from my deck as I literally live in a Boreal Forest .. have you heard of forest bathing?
  • the quiet rustle of leaves as a breeze blows through the forest
  • the haunting sound of loons on the lake
  • the sweet smell of campfires around the lake
  • I’ve progressed to using a cane and I can carry a cup of coffee to wherever I want to sit (huge!)
  • online grocery shopping (honestly it’s been a Godsend)
  • Sweet August bouquets from my local flower farm

What is “Forest Bathing”

In 1982, the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries created the term shinrin-yoku, which translates to “forest bathing” or “absorbing the forest atmosphere.” The practice encourages people to simply spend time in nature — no actual bathing required.

So what are you savouring these days? I’d love to hear! Thank you for being here xo

  1. So true Barb. It’s the small everyday things that really matter. And now that I’m older ( maybe a little wiser or not! ) I’m learning to celebrate them more. 😀

    1. Hi Annie! I’m savouring the fact that you came by to read my blog and you left a comment! I really, truly, appreciate it xo

  2. Barb,
Such a delight to see your beautiful images and read your blog. I am finding that I am not spending much time during the day on IG. I have started to read again and that feels so satisfying.
Next step major clean out of the props …

Glad you are on the mend ❤️‍🩹

    1. Hi Ann .. thank you so much .. I love that you stopped by xo
I read a book too! major accomplishment! I read “Where the Crawdads Sing” and I really enjoyed it (next up .. the movie).
Hubby and I were just discussing our next big purge .. it’s never-ending!

  3. I’m happy to read that you are doing well. I will be happier to read how you feel in 6 months. 🙂 Both of my hips do just fine, although surrounding arthritis causes twinges on a regular basis. No restrictions, however. As for the “small things,” I need to do some thinking about those. Kinda big things have been running my life recently, though: 92-year-old MIL in nursing home and on hospice but still quick thinking. Hubby is “tied” to that situation so we can’t visit our granddaughter as we want or go to NY to visit the older son. I keep reminding myself that I’m almost 80…Wow! Photography and crafting are still big items on my plate, but I’ve found little satisfaction in them recently. I think I need to sit on the back porch and remind myself of the “little things.” It’s good to read your post.

    1. Hi Evelyn, thank you so much! I will definitely report back in six months (probably sooner). I am glad your hips are better but I hear you about surrounding arthritis (I have issues too, sadly 🙁
I understand about the big things .. these small things can’t make them better I know and I am sorry .. sending big hugs to you .. you are one brave woman xo
