Setting a Goal

A while ago I ran across this quote by Zig Ziglar and oh my goodness, did it ever speak to me!

“If you aim at nothing, you will hit it every time.”

Zig Ziglar

That’s me in a nutshell these days. I haven’t set a goal in ages. I seem to work on just whatever I feel like at the moment. As I’ve mentioned in other posts, I’ve been inspired with updating my site, but only when the urge hits, and when the urge subsides, I tend to coast. A project can sit for days before I get to it and because I don’t have a clear picture of what I want to accomplish, nothing happens.

In other areas, it goes something like this .. hmmm, I should set up a flat lay today, I should develop a few new backgrounds, I should be marketing my product more. But, somehow it doesn’t happen, at least not until I feel inspired again, and that can take days (or weeks!)

So when I saw the above quote, I asked myself—what is the one thing I could commit to on a regular basis? what is inspiring me most at this time?

Well, the answer to that question was clear—my web site. My web site is what’s inspiring me the most.

After thinking about it for a while (and sleeping on it) I decided to set a goal to accomplish one thing—write and publish one blog post per week. It doesn’t have to be earth shattering—just show up and do the work on a regular basis.

I once read that in order to accomplish a goal, we need to have an in-depth plan. It doesn’t have to be complicated, a step-by-step plan is simply a blueprint.

So, here is my “blueprint” for writing a blog post:

My Steps for Writing a Blog Post

  • Choose a topic or start with an inspiring quote
  • Research the topic, but speak from the heart
  • Use a special notebook to take notes
  • Create a title
  • Start writing, save a draft
  • Use an image that will work with the post (all images I use are my own)
  • Write it, post it, share it

If I commit to doing this one thing on a regular basis .. I’m wondering where else it might take me. I’m thinking a little bit of creative discipline will go a long way.
